True Name: Henry Chaplin
General Internet Alias: Karacol
Artwork Choice for publication: Two of Cups from his Karacol Tarot Deck

The Karacol Tarot was born in a fit of inspiration after a six months living and meditating in Spain. The deck takes its name from the Spanish word caracol. It refers to spirals, swirling motion and a triple-spiral staircase in Santiago de la Compostela -- things he loves and a place where he drew much inspiration. The art interprets tarot archetypes in a personal way, which essentially makes the deck a private diary accessible to everyone. Creating the deck has been and continues to be a rewarding journey. About Ellygator:
I am 40 years old and have a husband but no children, which accounts for the obscene amount of time I can spend on art. I've been drawing for many years, but stopped for probably about 10 years until I joined DA in 2004. I am working half-time as a project management instructor and half-time as a freelance consultant, hoping to go full-time as a freelancer.

My Mum was an art teacher at school for many years, and while a lot of parents encourage their kids to draw pictures, she really took that kind of encouragement to the next level offering a lot of support, inspiration and materials for different techniques to keep me interested and help me develop. Thinking back, I learned watercolor painting from her, drawing, silk-painting, stained-glass making, embroidery, she got me clay for sculpting and even booked time at a communcal kiln to burn and help me glaze my miserable first attempts. She had my pictures framed (even the bad ones) and hung them all over our home. So while a lot of kids eventually stop drawing, to me it became a very natural process to do something creative of one sort or another. And it made it easier for me to teach myself new techniques later, like beading, jewelry making, working with pastels and lampwork. I guess I always had this message from her that I could do anything that I put my mind to in the way of art, and I am deeply grateful to her for that kind of confidence she inspired.

I studied history of art for many years at university even getting a PhD with a thesis on William Blake and his influence on the Preraphaelite movement and at some point in my life was quite serious about becoming maybe a lecturer or a curator in a museum. This has left me with a wonderfully stored mind regarding compositions, iconography and imagery. My main area of interest is 19th century art from the English Preraphaelites (you can probably tell from the painfully labored detailed backgrounds and my obsession with textures) to continental Art Nouveau (mostly for my silver jewelry). I love reading, though I've shifted my focus from reading mainly fiction to more non-fiction books, especially on philosophy, art, science, ancient history (Egypt, Greece, Rome) and on the occult (High Magick, Alchemy, Rosicrucianism, Crowley, Golden Dawn and Kabbalah). When I can I try and get to the outdoors for hiking, biking and camping. I also enjoy cooking. I travel a lot for business and it's always pre-prepared meals, cafeteria junk-food and your usual hotel staple diet of chicken wings, caesar salad, pasta Alfredo and steak. So when I'm home I'll cook German recipes from home, English food like Yorkshire pudding for my husband, or Indian food which we both love!

Why this artist chose Harry Potter as a theme?
Actually I was determined at one point to cultivate snobbish disregard for the whole phenomenon. That was about at the time book two had come out. My younger sister was a rabid fan and I just thought she was silly. Still she faithfully sent me copies of all the three volumes as books on tape and they collected dust on my shelf. And then fate intervened when I decided to have my life-long nearsightedness fixed and have a lasik procedure on my eyes. They put me on the table first thing in the morning and then had my husband drive me home while I was under strict orders to stay in bed in a darkened room and wear something like swimming goggles over my eyes for 24 hours. Booooring! I guess I got so antsy, my husband eventually put a tape recorder next to our bed and popped in my sister's tapes. I had nowhere else to go, so I listened, and it was simply magical!

After that I was definitely a confirmed fan. Overall I would have to say while I like the whole story-line over the sequence of the books, I am not that interested in the fates of the children characters or even in the final showdown with Voldemort. My fascination with the books has to do with the incredible imagination JKR has lavished on even the smallest details, the kind of vignettes that show how much she has immersed herself in the "reality" of a world that is entirely fictional, to come up with something like the Marauders Map insulting Snape, the witch at St. Mungo's with a tangerine stuck up her nose, Sir Nick being denied membership in the Headless Hunt because of a technical glitch, the demented Lockhart still intent on giving authographs… I just love that kind of attention to the craft, the sense of humor behind it. I also like the erudition that has gone into the stories, the references to alchemy, astrology and high magick that show knowledge of and sympathy with the subject. So I read more within the gaps of the story, the things that are not said, I focus on the minor characters, the behind-the-scenes happenings, the grey areas.

I decided to combine my passion for the Tarot and for Harry Potter, because JKR's writings simply invite the comparison: the four houses aligned with the four elements, the affiliation of characters with cards, one chapter in "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" even bears the title "The Lightning-struck Tower". Also while I may eventually want to do an entirely independent Tarot, I just felt I wasn't ready for that yet, and I am seeing this as a great exercise to hone my drawing skills and to really study each individual card in as much depth as I can.

The artist's words on Why the Tarot?
In college a good friend of mine broke out a Raider-White Tarot deck one evening after I had probably spent an hour chewing her ear off about some problem or other I had and suggested she'd do a reading for me. Having grown up in a fairly strict catholic household (convent school and the lot) I had never seen a Tarot deck before and I was enchanted: there was a knight going forth on his quest in a sphinx-drawn chariot, death bringing in the harvest of men, a falling tower, a heart pierced by three swords... the images had all the appeal of half-remembered dreams and an uncanny sense of telling more than could be seen on the surface. I also noticed that as my friend explained the spread to me, things started falling into place, and when her reading was done I felt my head had cleared, the path through my problem suddenly lay clear before my feet. Suffice it to say - I was hooked. I got myself a deck within a week and started studying with her and by myself. Now I own probably over a dozen decks and one entire shelf in my room is dedicated to Tarot literature. I moved from Raider-White to Crowley eventually, which is still my primary deck of choice for readings, and I think Liber 777 is one of the most illuminated and illuminating books ever written on the subject of the Tarot.

My favorite workings are laying the Celtic cross spread, picking a single day-card every morning and for a broader trending divination laying out the cards in the 12 houses. I regularly do readings both for myself and for close friends, but I explain to people beforehand that I am not a medium. My belief is that the archetypal images of the cards will allow your subconscious to communicate solutions to problems that it has already worked out, but that your conscious mind is still struggling with. For many years I've harbored the secret ambition to design and draw my own deck, and I've finally plucked up the courage to do so.

Tarot Garden's January 2008 Solo Show featuring artist member:

Joseph :iconjosephstaleknight: taleknight

Biography
I have been interested in the Tarot since I was very young. I once stumbled upon a deck of cards that looked very much like Rider-Waites, and I wanted to play with them. The only problem? They were my sister's. Still, that had sown the seed for my interest in the Tarot. So I read several books about it, but apparently I seemed to get nowehere, because the books seemed to say "Do this!" or "No! Not that way!" (I was still a mere Fool). Eventually, I gave it up for about 11 years.

Then I came back to it via a reference in an art book that I got for my 17th birthday. I got curious again, and so I began exploring it again. And this time, I understood. "Do this" was "It helps calm you down," and "No! Not that!" was "It's now what you expect it to be." Most of all, however, I was attracted to the art and symbology for each deck. For example, the Haindl Tarot used I Ching, Runes, Qabbalah, and Astrological Signs to create a fuller picture of the card's meaning. I'm surprised that he didn't use Geomancy or Letters of Fortune.

Today, I have seven decks; Elemental, Crowley, Mythic, Celestial, Archeon, Haindl, and Cachet (though I rarely use the last). The decks I want to get: Rohrig, Wheel of Change, Baseball, Alchemical, and Norse, among others. Nowadays, I tend not to want Rider-Waites, since they are so ubiquitous, and I prefer the unique.

As for myself, I was born in 1990 to a radiologist Emperor/father and a stay-at-home Empress/mother. I am a proud Virginian resident, and plan to go to GMU Fall 2008. My internet life is as strong as can get. Right now, I am involved in five forums (one of which inspired one of my Tarots), and I have known several games that I play on the computer. As for my hobbies, aside from art, I like video games, Mythbusters, and literature (esp. Shakespeare). I actually am one of the few that still read for fun.

My net name comes from the time I played chess. "Staleknight" was a combination of "stalemate" and "knight". I needed something euphonious to complete my name, so I picked "Joseph".

My artistic achievements include an Honorable Mention in the annual Reflections Contest for poetry, and a helping hand for my school's literary magazine, Carousel. I am also looking forward to attending a variety show for Music, Visual Art, and Literature.

I get along with others, even though I may occasionally look like I'm unresponsive. That's usually because I need to think for myself before I lose it, which hopefully I rarely do. In essence, I am a King of Wands/Queen of Swords.

If I were a Major Arcanum, I'd be a Magician. With a bit of Fool in me.

-Joseph Staleknight

(P.S. My insignia was derived from a font called Skreech Caps. I also had an affinity for fonts and typography.)
